“I Did Not Sign Up for This!” Navigating the Emotional Rollercoaster of Gatekeeping and Empowering Counselor Educators

1.5 NBCC Continuing Education Units

As gatekeepers, counselor educators play a pivotal role in ensuring the competence of counselor-in-training (CITs) to meet the needs of society’s most vulnerable populations

However, the gatekeeping process inherently presents challenges that can negatively impact the emotional well-being of counselor educators. This presentation will explore the emotional ramifications of the gatekeeping role on counselor educators, discuss effective self-care strategies during the gatekeeping process, and examine how graduate counseling programs can support faculty in navigating these challenges. By addressing these issues, we aim to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of counselor educators in their critical gatekeeping role.
