The Core faculty reports to the Academic Unit Head/Chair and regularly collaborates with the Chair and fellow full-time faculty (Core, Teaching, and Affiliate) members in the Counseling Department (PhD CES levels).  The Core faculty is responsible to maintain work in all four areas of faculty engagement at Antioch University (student learning, scholarship, institutional citizenship and service).  The teaching load may fluctuate based on departmental administrative demands. The PhD Core Faculty teaches in both the PhD Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) Program and the MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) Program and is expected to be a leader in their field with an appropriate publication and presentation record and a working knowledge of alternative delivery models including technology-mediated/low-residency education.  All Core PhD Level Faculty have either a) successfully completed their initial 3-year Core Faculty contract with Antioch University Seattle and have been offered a consecutive 3-year Core appointment or b) were hired directly into a Core Faculty position within the CES Program. The position reports to the Counseling Department Leadership Team (equally to the CMHC Chair and the CES Chair).

The low residential CES department at AUS is an accredited program (CACREP) encouraging a multicultural counselor identity appreciating diversity and human growth in context to social dynamics while also advocating for community justice, equity, and civil discourse. This is concurrent with an emphasis on systemic leadership, and supervisory skills needed to assist with organizational change and transformation. Within a cohort model, uniquely partnered with the MA low residence program, doctoral students are provided early experiential learning within a continuous integration of theory and practice as well as frequent opportunities for students to know and experience the curricular delivery of a counselor education program.

Responsibilities:

A.    Engagement in Student Learning:  Teaching load will be determined in consultation with the Chair and Provost. Course development reflecting program values and current trends in the field as well as conducting workshops/trainings on topics as needed. Chairing and serving on dissertation committees will be required.

B.    Engagement in Scholarship and Creative Work:  Conducts academic research, publishes appropriately in the discipline, and makes presentations at professional meetings. Mentors and supports the scholarship students emphasizing collaboration and transformational research.  Maintains membership in professional organizations and attends professional trainings, conferences and workshops to enhance professional growth and expertise.  Shows a consistent involvement and drive for leadership within counseling professional organizations (ACA, ACES, WACES, AMCD, CSJ, local state chapters, etc.)

C.    Engagement in Service:  Participates in community service and in local, statewide, national and/or international levels that further the interests of the students, local community, program, and university (directly or indirectly).

D.    Engagement in Institutional Citizenship:  Serves as mentor to MA Core, Teaching, Affiliate and Adjunct colleagues. Takes part in the collection of data for program evaluation and accreditation processes. Participates in aspects of the CES and CMHC programs as needed, including admissions work, new student orientation, the development of workshops or special events, and student, alumni, and faculty surveys. Participates in university committees in consultation with program chair, and aids in the development and revision of the curriculum.

UNIVERSITY RESPONSIBILITIES:  The PhD Core Faculty in the CMHC Program is a member of campus governance groups and committees, among them Faculty Assembly, and search committees as required by Core Faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS: The PhD Core Faculty in the CES Department must hold

  • An earned doctoral degree in the Counselor Education and Supervision, CACREP/CACREP Aligned.
  • Core Faculty designation/eligible within the Counseling Department
  • 4+ years successful teaching history at graduate level in counselor education
  • Licensed as LMHC in State of Washington or equal licensing in another state or national counseling credential WA State (or other state) Approved Supervisor credential (preferred).
  • Strong record of administrative/leadership experience in higher education
  • A clear history of service to the counseling profession and an interest in leadership thereof
  • A history of publication and presentation work at the local and national level
  • Strong record of leadership/coordination role within a Counseling Department
  • Strong record of teaching at the graduate level—a proven history of high marks in student evaluations (made available to the committee)
  • Optimistic, collaborative, and proactive leadership skills
  • Strong record of both online and on the ground teaching formats
  • Interest in the development of leaders
  • Skilled in demonstration-based teaching (faculty need to teach using real/live demonstration) and experiential learning
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to oversee various operational processes within the department at one time
  • Clear developmental skills with a focus on providing new opportunities for students, faculty and staff to excel.
  • This is an environment that expects high productivity and quick response time, as well as the ability to minimize operational tasks and maximize creativity and innovation.  The PhD Core Faculty must be able to balance institutional priorities with program needs and initiatives, in the ultimate service of student development and professional counselor gatekeeping.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills—an additional interest in grant writing is preferred
  • Ability to be flexible and working in an environment of expansion and change
  • Ability and interest to serve on the SEIU Faculty Bargaining Committee
